Just Ask: 3 Steps

Need to ask...

...for help on a project?

...for someone to do an activity?

The Harvard Business Review has 3 easy and effective steps.

1. Just Ask.

The #1 mistake people make is in psyching themselves out of asking.

2. Be Direct.

People respect direct questions that don't waste their time and are to the point.

Being passive or beating around the bush does not work. Although it may be the more polite approach, people respond more positively to direct questions.

3. Ask Again.

Research shows that once a person says "no," they may be more apt to say "yes" when you ask again because they feel guilty for saying "no" the first time.

Incentives are not needed.

Research shows that people are just as likely to comply with certain requests for free as they would in exchange for something.
